| At this point I'm at about an 8 on the tired scale for our tour day. |
Hello, my name is Jay Grote.
I'm a sophomore at Doane College where I am studying to get my double major in Journalism & Media and Information Technology.
So why in the world is anyone writing about Nebraska politics? To answer that question we must examine my strange love affair with the corn-husker state.
In the picture above you'll see me at the Custis-Lee Mansion at Arlington National Cemetary in Washington D.C. While there I learned all about journalism and history and that you always take good insoles on a trip to D.C. -- hence my fake smile above.
Upon arrival back to the "...good life" I felt a great appreciation for my state and all that comes with it. I drove from Omaha to Gering to get home to see my family. Basically I started off at 3:30 am in D.C. and by 11:30 pm I was at home. Enter exhaustion stage-left.
Clearly Nebraska isn't anywhere near as polarized at D.C. in terms of politics. In terms of temperature, yes Nebraska is quite polarized at the moment. But right now is a key time in political history.
The Republican party is changing, things are going to sway, the big-wigs will try to stop the party movement while the grassroots efforts will not listen. I hope to document the movement right here in the red state.
As for the Democrats, I guess I can't say what they will do during all this. Knowing that the best way for both parties to survive is to have differences, I am willing to bet that the left will first broaden to both sides then finally find its new groove to rest for another generation or so.
Anyway, I love Nebraska. Interstate 80 stinks to drive on, so sometimes when I go home I take 30, 2, or most recently 20 between Crete and 'Bluffs. For anyone who hasn't taken these roads, you haven't met Nebraska until you've driven on these winding and hill filled asphalts.
So yeah, I've seen the countryside, slicked the city side, now I'm writing about the broadside of politics and government for the great state of Nebraska...enjoy!
